HOSTILITIES START AGAIN IN GAZA

The ceasefire has come to an end in Gaza on Tuesday 19th by midnight and even before, both sides in the conflict had started again to attack each other. Hundreds of Gazans have started to flee suburbs of Gaza

a under attack to take refuge into UN schools used as shelters. Hamas launched about 60 rockets, including 53 before the end of the ceasefire. One fell on Tel-Aviv, the other on Jerusalem, without making any victim. Before the end of the ceasefire, Israel organized about 30 raids on Gaza, and 30 others afterwards, killing at least 10 Palestinians. A 32 years old Palestinian man, his pregnant wife, 3 of his children and their uncle were among the victims. Among the victims are the woman and the 7-months old son of Mohamed Deif, a senior Hamas leader. It is unknown if he has been himself killed in the event. Since the beginning of the conflict, 2028 Palestinians, most of them civilians, were killed, and 10 302 injured. 64 Israeli soldiers and 3 civilians have been killed. According to Hazem Abu Murad, the head of Gaza’s bomb squad, quoted by the Electronic Intifada (http://electronicintifada.net/blogs/ali-abunimah/how-many-bombs-has-israel-dropped-gaza), Israel has dropped eighteen to twenty thousand tons of explosives on Gaza since July 7, the equivalent to one of the atomic bombs used by the USA on Japan in August 1945.

Azzam al-Ahmed, chief of the Palestinian delegation in Cairo, said that the ceasefire was broken « because of Israel », while Israelis claim it is the eleventh time Hamas broke it. The Palestinian delegation left but said it « was not out of the negotiations », and affirms that the Israeli departure had been “pre-programmed”. The Palestinian delegation has repeatedly demanded the end of the blockade of Gaza, which has lasted for years, but Israel requires the demilitarization of Gaza. Palestinians also demand the opening of a port and of an airport in Gaza, but Israel has totally excluded that idea from the discussions, which would allow Gazans to have unlimited access to the outside world.

Israeli academic Shlomo Sand said in 2009 (see http://www.telerama.fr/idees/israel-a-t-il-perdu-la-guerre-entretien-avec-l-historien-israelien-shlomo-sand,38589.php) that Hamas is « not an army, but it is a terrorist resistance movement acting […] like the Viet-Cong or the FLN. It is because our leaders knew that that they should have privileged diplomacy, to avoid this massacre of civilians ». Israel’s current government has an imperialist strategy against the Palestinians. It intends to govern Gaza and the West Bank instead of the Palestinians, and actually tries to pretend it does that in their interest, because for instance of the humanitarian help it allocates to Gaza. It already commands its borders, its customs and frequently refuses to transfer to the Palestinians the money it owes them. 1/3 of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for instance, cannot enjoy their democratic rights and do not have any sovereignty. It controls its seas, and intends to achieve control of its marine gaz reserves (see http://www.eiilir.eu/politics-strategies/middle-east/israel-palestine/129-israel-s-war-on-terror-is-a-war-for-natural-gas). It uses a strategy of terror, a shock doctrine (see http://www.eiilir.eu/politics-strategies/topics/actual-topics/128-israel-s-dahiya-doctrine-terror-tactics-to-ensure-colonial-domination-in-gaza), aiming on the long run at taking control of the entire Palestinian territory, by pushing Gaza inhabitants out of their enclave into the Sinaï, and to ensure full domination of the West Bank by deterring its inhabitants from rebelling against the occupation. This is why Israel still refuses to define its definitive borders, unlike most other countries in the world, and this is because it still intends to enlarge them, notes Shlomo Sand (http://blogs.mediapart.fr/edition/les-invites-de-mediapart/article/200814/les-muses-et-la-mort).

Dr.Daud Abdullah for the Middle East Monitor (https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/resources/commentary-and-analysis/13597-the-days-of-open-ended-palestinian-concessions-are-over) says that :

“To the same degree that Israel’s 2008/9 Operation Cast Lead ended the political career of Ehud Olmert, so too Benjamin Netanyahu’s Operation Protective Edge is threatening to bring his career to a close. Having spent an estimated $2.5 billion to $3.6 billion in the first four weeks, Netanyahu can ill-afford to fund a prolonged campaign. Already, the financial cost is beginning to have a negative impact on the lifestyle of Israel’s consumer society and the country’s 2015 budget deficit is expected to rise significantly. Sooner or later Netanyahu will have to pay a political price for jeopardising the social comforts of Israeli citizens. »

Israel is solely able to afford this deficit because of the $30 billion of military help the US government has granted it for the years 2009 – 2018. This is why the Israeli arms industry is so developed and has become now a driver of the Israeli economy. Benyamin Netanyahu is a former captain of the Israeli Defence Forces, and his older brother Yonatan was killed during Operation Entebbe in Uganda in 1976. He has sold himself to the Israeli public as a warmonger and his government is almost a military government. Avraham Burg, a former Israeli politician, explained in an interview to Le Monde (http://www.lemonde.fr/international/article/2014/07/18/tsahal-n-a-pas-de-solution-parce-que-la-direction-politique-n-a-pas-de-vision_4459444_3210.html) that Israel has « no political vision » in Gaza  : this is because the current Israeli government is neo-Conservative and solely understand military means as a way to achieve peace. Benyamin Netanyahu is not prepared to negotiate peace : he must be internationally boycotted if we want to achieve it.
